ELGAR COMPLETE EDITION
Volume 37
Music for Violin

The Elgar Society Edition Ltd is pleased to announce the imminent publication of a further volume in the Elgar Complete Edition - Volume 37: Music for Violin. With an official publication date of 2 June 2007, the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth, the volume is now in the final stages of production and will be available for shipping in the next 2-3 weeks.

     It is now two years since the last volume in the Edition - Volume 18: The Crown of India - appeared, far longer than we anticipated or would have wished. But Volume 37 has proved challenging and notches up a succession of `firsts':

-     it is, at 352 pages, by some way the longest of the volumes so far published and, we anticipate, will prove to be one of the longest in the 43-volume Edition;
-     it also contains by far the greatest number of works - 37 completed compositions, including the Violin Sonata, and an Appendix of 31 sketches, fragments and substantial but unfinished works - posing new challenges of presentation and standardisation;
-     it is the first volume to be published under the General Editorship of John Pickard, academic, composer and an expert on Elgar's music, with Robert Anderson, the former General Editor becoming the Chairman of the Elgar Society Edition;
-     it is the first volume in which the musical scores have been re-originated in their entirety, attaining much higher standards of clarity and consistency of appearance.

     The Volume is edited by Clive Brown, Professor of Music at Leeds University and an acknowledged expert on violin technique with a number of authoritative publications to his name. He brings a unique insight to the progressive development of Elgar's compositional style for the violin throughout his career, from his Romance opus 1 to the late Violin Sonata.

     All in all, a volume which, both in academic terms and production values, we consider to be superior to all previously published volumes in the Edition and sets the standard for volumes to come. It comes complete with the customary apparatus of detailed source descriptions, commentaries and an introductory foreword, and can be obtained through all good book stores and specialist music shops, or directly from the publisher.
