North West Branch

  • Introduction

The North West branch of the Society was formed in 1976 and for the first eight years met in Liverpool. In 1984, the branch relocated to Manchester and made the Royal Northern College of Music its base. The branch meets between six and eight times a year; its season runs from October to May. Most meetings take place on a Saturday starting at 3.00pm and last for approximately two hours.

Elgar had many connections with the North of England, with close friends in Liverpool (Alfred Rodewald) and at Settle in Yorkshire (Dr Charles Buck). The first performance of Elgar's Symphony No 1 in A flat major was given in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester by the Hallé Orchestra. It was conducted by the orchestra's principal conductor Dr Hans Richter, a keen champion of Elgar's music and the "true artist and true friend" to whom Elgar dedicated the symphony. Of these connections, the branch is justly proud.

The branch is also proud of its close links with Chethams school of music in Manchester. In 1993, the branch sponsored a concert given by the school's orchestra which included the Elgar Violin Concerto. A competition among scholars for the role of soloist in the performance was won by Ruth Williams, a talented young violinist who went on to play with the European Youth Orchestra.
